Yes! This is something I am passionate about. I think every student deserves to be challenged and sadly, due to the nature of school classrooms, they often are not. I think this creates frustration, disengagement and, sometimes, behavioral issues. As a 1:1 tutor, I can move at your child's pace and the sky is the limit in terms of the challenge level. I've seen 10 year olds produce work which would compete with any college freshmen. I design these assignments not for the bragging rights but because a certain type of student NEEDS them to thrive.
As the mother of a twice exceptional student, I am daily confronted with how amazingly gifted students can also have significant difficulties. Asynchronity is extremely common amongst the gifted population. Since it is so common, I have worked with many students who have ADHD, are on the spectrum and other neurodiversities. I am not Special Ed trained. That may come in time. In the meantime, I rely on parents (and often the students themselves) to tell mw what helps the student. I am more than happy to adapt my teaching to meeting these student's needs. Some things that have helped other students are shorter, more frequent sessions, physical manipulatives, short movement breaks and switching up activities when attention wanders.
I like to have a 20-30 minute intake call with the parent to go over the student's current ELA level, the goals for the program, any neurodiversities I should be aware of etc. The parent can then think about it, discuss with other caregivers and the student and then schedule a 1 hour session. This session is partly introductory, I ask the student what their goals are and how they learn best. I also do a standalone learning activity so they can tell my teaching style. After that, I send a summary email and ask if the student would like to secure a regular timeslot with me.
I will send an invoice for the future month one week before it starts with all the slots I am holding for you.
Payment is due by the 1st of the month. Your prompt attendance to the bill is very much appreciated so I can focus on teaching rather than the dreaded admin!
24hrs notice is required for cancellations (except in emergency cases) so I reserve the right to bill for the time. However I know that things come up (sometimes they do for me too). If your student can't make their session, please let me know with as much advance notice as possible and I will try my best to reschedule them within that month. If I can't, I will credit your next bill.
Sometimes students come to class 10+ minutes late in which case I will send an email to the parent and bill for the full time I was available. As a parent myself, I would want to know if my student had timekeeping problems and, as a tutor, I want to work with parents to help students with that skill.
